The Peterloo Massacre is one of the greatest tragedies of Manchester’s history. On August 16 1819 a peaceful crowd came to ask for very basic civil and political rights such as the right to vote. They, the forces of law and order, turned the drunken yeomen on the crowd, killing many and leaving many more wounded.

The audience also heard about five political prisoners who would have liked to have been present to speak about the struggle for freedom in their countries but are currently being held in prison. You can read their stories here.

The ‘Yarden’ Open Day saw many people in Moss Side open up their backyards to show what can be done with imaginative design and planting. Residents of Lloyd Street South and Thornton Road also came out to enjoy the sunshine and the company of their neighbours.

Tony Lloyd attended the opening ceremony of Hulme Community Garden Centre’s new Eco-Classroom – Manchester’s first straw bale building – on Friday 12th August. The classroom features recycled materials, a green roof, lime rendered interior and renewable energy.

Despite all difficulties the Hulme music festival went ahead on Saturday 30 July 2011. Many people were out enjoying themselves at what turned out to be a great community event.
