08 May 2009 - Tony part of group of MPs to lobby PM on Gaza
Prime Minister Gordon Brown was lobbied on the aftermath of the Gaza conflict today by a deputation of MPs from Labour Friends of Palestine & the Middle East. The organisation was launched in January during the Gaza conflict and already has 98 supporters.
The deputation included Communities minister Sadiq Khan and (left to right in picture) MPs Karen Buck, Andrew Slaughter, Christine Russell, Phyllis Starkey, Martin Linton, Richard Burden and Tony Lloyd.

22 April 2009 - Tony supports Charlotte's Shining Star Campaign

Charlotte's Shining Star Launch Event took place on Saturday 18th April in Manchester. The event saw one thousand people gather their voice in song against Cervical Cancer. Charlotte, from Hulme, was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 20 and is fighting to lower the start age of smear tests to help other young women, who currently don’t get called for smear tests until they reach the age of 25.
Tony is pictured above at the launch event with Charlotte, Cllr Emily Lomax, and Cllr Mary Murphy.
Tony Lloyd is backing the campaign, and says Gordon Brown has promised to look at lowering the age of screening.
He said: "I am 100 per cent behind Charlotte's campaign. Her bravery shines out like a beacon.
"We want to make sure that her message is properly understood. We know screening works, it is just as important for young women and older women that these facilities are available not simply to put their minds at rest but to make sure that people get treatment when they need it."
For more information about the campaign please visit Charlotte's Shining Star.

20 March 2009 - Recent News
To mark World Glaucoma Day, Thursday 12 March, Tony Lloyd joined RNIB and researchers from Moorfield's Eye Hospital at a parliamentary reception where exciting new technology under development was revealed that will improve access to potentially sight saving tests for glaucoma.
Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of preventable blindness. It is estimated there are 67 million glaucoma sufferers in the world, but over 50% are undiagnosed, rising to 90% in the developing world. 500,000 people are affected in the UK but half are not receiving treatment because they are unaware they have the disease.
Tony said "I urge local people to have an eye test and ensure they are not one of the quarter of a million people in the UK with undiagnosed Glaucoma."
Many people are entitled to receive free eye tests. People who are over 40 and have a close relative with Glaucoma, have diabetes, are aged 60 or over, or who themselves or their partner receive benefits, family credit, pension credit.
For more information about glaucoma, visit www.rnib.org.uk or call the RNIB Helpline on 0303 123 9999.

28 January 2009 - Tony in Parliament — Oral Answers to Questions Transport (27/01)
Tony Lloyd: My right hon. Friend is right to emphasise the fact that the Government have played their role in the upgrade of the west coast main line. However, as my hon. Friend Mr. Martlew points out, Network Rail has let the travelling public down badly through poor maintenance and the disruption to services. Will my right hon. Friend examine the quality of Network Rail's senior management? Perhaps he does not wish to comment on that in the House today, but will he take a view as to whether the incentives that they regard as essential ought to be coupled with disincentives when they get things so badly wrong?

23 January 2009 - Holocaust Memorial Day Book of Commitment
Tony Lloyd MP showed his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by signing a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to honour those who perished in the Holocaust.
As in previous years, Holocaust Educational Trust placed the Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to give MPs the opportunity to pledge that they will uphold the memory of the Holocaust and oppose hatred today.
January 27th marks the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous concentration and extermination camp.
This year is the ninth year that the anniversary of the liberation of the camp has been officially commemorated in the UK. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the day passing the Holocaust Memorial Day resolution.
Tony Lloyd marks Diabetes UK 75th Anniversary at Parliamentary Reception
Tony Lloyd attended a House of Commons Parliamentary Reception on Tuesday 20 January to mark the 75th anniversary of leading health charity Diabetes UK.
The reception formally launched a year of events that will mark the anniversary and recognise the progress that has been made in diabetes care over the last 75 years.
Mr Lloyd said: "There are almost 5,000 people with diabetes in my constituency and with four hundred people being diagnosed with diabetes every day in the UK - equal to one person every three minutes - the condition is one of the biggest health challenges currently facing the UK.
"Moving diabetes up the political agenda in Diabetes UK’s 75th anniversary year is a must if we are to curb this growing health crisis and see a reduction in the number of people being diagnosed with this serious condition."
Diabetes is a serious condition that, if not managed effectively, can lead to long-term complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation. Short-term complications of the condition include hypoglycaemic episodes, known as 'hypos', can lead to unconsciousness and hospitalisation if left untreated. However, effective diabetes management from the time of diagnosis can reduce the risk of these complications.

22 January 2009 - MP's Expenses
The subject of MPs' expenditure has exercised the attention of both the Public and Parliament because of the actions of a small number of MPs who grossly abused the system. I well understand the concern felt by many but I do believe that the media reporting has been incompetent in the way it has portrayed what Parliament does, and proposes to do, with respect to the publication of MPs' expenditure.
